How will AI and IT teams work together? And how does that affect the role of the IT department?<b> In this third and final part of our blog miniseries, we discover what the 1,000 British IT professionals surveyed in our recent study have to say about their expectations around the impact of AI on the future of IT. And we can safely say: change is imminent.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>AI as a pillar for a future-proof IT department<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nearly half of the respondents agree that <b>one of the main characteristics for a future-proof IT department is the use of AI<\/b>, for everything from repetitive tasks through to advanced insights, with 22% stating that <b>lack of automation or AI tools is actually holding them back.<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The professionals\u2019 view of how future proof <i>their<\/i> department is, appears closely linked to their organization\u2019s AI maturity. <b>Those who feel more mature are far more confident<\/b>, with 98% seeing themselves as future-proof, compared to 83% of those still experimenting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Zooming in on the number of IT professionals who currently consider their department to be<i> fully<\/i> <i>future-proof<\/i>, this drops to 45% \u2013 which is largely similar to other European countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As we\u2019ve seen in our previous blog, there are different things impacting organizations\u2019 AI maturity levels (and there\u2019s a lot of room for improvement, too).<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53742 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN.png 1920w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-1024x810.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-768x608.png 768w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-1536x1215.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-63x50.png 63w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-265x210.png 265w, https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/wp-content\/media\/sites\/30\/TOPdesk-AI-infographic-Image-1-Blog-3-EN-152x120.png 152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/>\n<h2>AI takes the passenger seat&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Despite embedding AI and increasingly embracing automation, one thing\u2019s become very clear: <i>AI does not replace the human.<\/i> It takes the passenger seat, with the human firmly behind the wheel. <b>Because the human touch at the right moment is more important than ever. <\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Thanks to smart technology, we\u2019re moving towards greater end-user autonomy. Employees will no longer need the IT department every time they face an issue. But, at the same time, personal contact remains essential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">There are always complex or personal situations in which you want or need to speak to an IT professional. The challenge for the IT department is not to replace human contact, but to <b>design the digital foundation in such a way that human time is invested where it really matters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8230;while the role of the IT department <em>is<\/em> changing<\/h2>\n<p>Considering the above, and the rapid technological advancements in the industry, it\u2019s hardly a surprise that the nation\u2019s <strong>IT departments are at a crossroads<\/strong>. With AI contributing to automation of repetitive and operational tasks, skilled resources are freed up to focus on more complex issues and add the human touch where necessary or deserved. It also allows IT to <strong>become a strategic partner <\/strong>that supports business goals, breaks down silos and makes resilience a top priority.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI can accelerate that transition. Not by replacing people, but by transforming their tasks.<\/strong> We already see AI increasingly answering first-line questions, enabling IT professionals to focus on collaboration, prevention, and innovation. Simply put: fewer tickets, more strategy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/blog\/what-is-service-automation\/\">Improved efficiency, lower costs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With AI as an accelerator, the IT function can be turned into a strategic foundation. But since AI doesn\u2019t always get the highest priority, <strong>we encourage IT to take the lead.<\/strong> With their background and tech affinity, IT teams can make sure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topdesk.com\/en\/cybersecurity-solution\/\">AI is used in a responsible and secure way<\/a>, in close collaboration with top management. The best way to do so?
